Twice Daily in the Morning and Afternoon:
  • Check Twitter. Respond when necessary. Follow the @replies that make sense.
  • Check your business's Facebook Page for questions and respond.
  • Scan Google Alerts for brand and company mentions. Respond as appropriate.
Once Weekly or on Weekends:
  • Build Twitter Lists to better organize ongoing discussions and special interest groups.
  • Add new content to Facebook like videos or photos.
  • Think of ways to repurpose this content and energy to reach a larger audience with the social networking gospel such as using Youtube.com for video tutorials
  • Keep an eye open for new social networking venues, tools, and functionality that will make the social networking experience more enjoyable and easy to traverse.
  • Create an E-zine article, mail to your client list and then post the content to your website blog, Facebook and Twitter.
Through the Week:
  • Mondays: Schedule tweets to go out three times per day at regular intervals.
  • Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: Join one hot trend conversation on Twitter, if appropriate, and add new content to Facebook (new items you are selling, photos, discounts and other promotions).
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays: Respond to blog comments.
  • Fridays: Check traffic at your blog or website.
 Use this as your guide as you get started. Just be sure to make the schedule livable. If it's not working, change it. Keep making modifications until it works for you.

Google Analytics is a valuable free Web analytics tool that will allow you to see what organic search keywords are already driving traffic to your website. This information will allow you to alter your website content to produce better search results, as well as show you where your social media presence is lacking.

Google Adwords Keyword Tool is another great free online function to use while building your website content. You can insert multiple keywords pertaining to your business, and Google will then provide a list of related keywords along with simple metrics to gauge how many searches you get on both a global and local search level.

SocialMention is a free search engine that allows you to have alerts sent to you daily containing mentions made online of you and your brand.

Knowing who your competitors are and what they are doing is just as important as knowing your own business. In terms of social media use, look at their websites, locate the social media icons, sign up as a fan and start watching what they do and ask yourself the following questions:
  • Are your competitors' fans complaining about a missing feature? Can you easily and profitably include that feature into your product?
  • Are they praising something both you and your competitor do, but you aren't actively promoting it in your marketing? Maybe you should.
  • What emotions do their fans seem to connect with in regard to your competitors' products and services? Can you tap into that same emotion?

AVOID poorly timing social media posts!

One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is not knowing who the client is and how he or she behaves on the social web. For instance, a report from the marketing analytics firm KISSmetrics shows that nearly 50% of the U.S. population who use social media live in the Eastern Time Zone, and more than 30% are in the Central Time Zone. The report also suggests that tweets posted at about 5 p.m. have the highest chance of being clicked on and shared. So, for example, if your business is on Pacific Time and you tweet at 5 p.m., you'd miss the "sweet spot" of more than 80 percent of the U.S. population!

Google smart phone and tablet apps that have key words associated with your field, and see what directories or search services pop up.  Contact the manager of these apps to seek out information regarding inclusion of your business, or simply snoop the competitors in the area to up your game on offering the best service packages around.  Another investment to consider is to create your own app specifically for your business.  In our fast paced world, customers are looking for businesses that cater to their crazy schedules.
